New York City Subway Expansion Design

It is the year 2030, and New York's 120 year old subway system is crumbling. There are constant problems of delays, breakdowns, and slow service, as the system cannot handle the annually increasing mass of people packing themselves into the stations and subways everyday. Even with the 2nd avenue subway being completed in 2020, that only slightly relieved the crowding on the 4,5,6 lines.

The mayor of New York comes to me and asks me to design a new high speed subway system that would revolutionize mass transit. I would build a new express system underneath the old system, with limited stops, and efficient connections to airports and highways.

These would be the express subway lines, and the old system would still serve as local lines.

There would be 2 subway lines, one east line and one west line:

East Line stops: (South to North)

1. JFK International Airport
2. Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn
3. Wall St/Fulton St Downtown Manhattan
4. Union Square 14th St
5. Grand Central 42nd St
6. Upper East Side 59th St
7. Westchester Connection to Interstate 95

West Line stops: (South to North)
1. Newark International Airport and New Jersey Turnpike
2. Jersey City
3. World Trade Center
4. Penn Station 34th St
5. Times Square 50th St
6. Columbus Circle 59th St
7. Yankee Stadium Bronx
8. Yonkers Connection to Interstate 87

These Express lines will allow for extremely quick travel between Midtown and Downtown, or quick travel from Midtown to Airports.

------------------------------------------
Before:
Times Square to Fulton St Downtown: 12 minutes

After:
Times Square to Fulton St: 5 minutes

------------------------------------------
Before:
Grand Central to JFK: 45 minutes

After:
Grand Central to JFK: 20 minutes

------------------------------------------
Before:
Newark Airport NJ to World Trade Center: 50 minutes

After:
Newark Airport NJ to World Trade Center: 20 minutes

  1. Sounds very similar to the Crossrail project in London: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossrail
